Rainbow Curve rebuild in Bentonville scheduled into 2028
Drivers around Rainbow Curve face construction extending into 2028, with the heaviest delays expected on Regional Airport and South Walton boulevards during morning and evening peaks. In the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's Nov. 1 report, City Engineer Jarrod Brightwell says work began Aug. 3 and most intersection reconstruction is scheduled through the third quarter of 2028.
That is not a guaranteed completion date for the entire project. Rainbow Lane between Walton and Regional Airport boulevards closed Sept. 8 and is scheduled to remain closed until April 2028.
The redesign moves the main intersection west, adds turn lanes and pedestrian facilities, and would leave Macy Road accessible from Walton only to westbound traffic. The report gives no date for that access change.
It puts the project estimate and the APAC-Central construction contract approved in May at more than $7.5 million, and identifies Rainbow Curve as part of the street improvements funded by the 2021 bond issue. Separately, the newspaper reports that the council authorized a $53,200 relocation payment on Oct. 27 to Performance Cars and Trucks, which moved after the city condemned its former property.
Sales manager Aaron Sluyter says the city has not paid what it owes for the property or the move. Authorization is not proof of payment; the report does not establish the total disputed amount or provide the city's response to that claim.

Tontitown is reviewing three options for treating Eco-Vista Landfill's leachate, the liquid that drains through landfill waste, before it reaches regional wastewater treatment. The Democrat-Gazette reports that landfill owner WM submitted an SCS Engineers evaluation on Oct. 27 without selecting an option. Its preliminary construction estimates are $19.38 million, $14 million and $10.3 million; estimated annual operating costs are $2.4 million, $1.94 million and $870,000, respectively.
The alternatives do not provide equivalent treatment: the first includes dedicated total-nitrogen removal, the second targets ammonia-nitrogen but lacks that dedicated total-nitrogen process, and the third is not configured to remove either. These are planning estimates, not an awarded contract or approved public expenditure. City engineers, the Northwest Arkansas Conservation Authority and the city's control authority are due to recommend a course to WM on Nov. 24. The report does not establish who would pay or whether any option has been accepted as compliant.
Three former J.B. Hunt employees, including a Bentonville resident, filed lawsuits seeking class-action status in federal court in Fayetteville on Oct. 27, the Democrat-Gazette reports. They allege that a data breach exposed employee information. A hacker group's claim to possess 140,838 employee records is not a verified count of affected people; the report notes that one complaint explicitly calls the hacker figures unverified.
In its response to the newspaper, J.B. Hunt said it was investigating unauthorized access to an isolated part of its technology system, had revoked that access and notified law enforcement, and had experienced no disruption to serving customers. It did not comment on the lawsuits. These are allegations and requests for class certification, not findings of liability or evidence that a class has been certified.

The morning meeting
How this brief got argued into shape. Each seat at the table is an AI model.

- The Oct. 27 council authorization of a $53,200 relocation payment sits alongside Aaron Sluyter’s statement that the city still hasn’t paid him what it owes for the property or the move. Construction started Aug. 3, will keep Rainbow Lane closed until April 2028, with most work continuing into Q3 2028.
- The analystGPT-6.1 Sol
- The access change deserves space alongside the construction delays: Macy Road will be reachable from Walton only by westbound drivers. April 2028 is the scheduled end of the Rainbow Lane closure; the third quarter of 2028 covers most intersection reconstruction, not a promise that every part will be finished.

- The safety case is thinner than the headline. Police counted five collisions in the Rainbow Curve area in 2026, blamed some on lane-switching, and said crashes fell after the 2017 turn lane. Nobody flagged that Macy Road will be reachable only from westbound Walton once the rebuild finishes, which is scheduled mostly through the third quarter of 2028.

- Gwynne's final editorial review: Rainbow Curve leads for the practical effect on Bentonville drivers and the reported public spending and relocation decision, not a promised safety improvement. I read the complete retained reports and actual staff research and discussion, attempted original-record checks, and wrote the final brief with the remaining gaps explicit. Road-closure application discovery did not yield the closure records. I separated construction stages, estimates and authorized payments from completed results, and removed the unsupported implication that the wastewater authority appears in all three infrastructure stories. Original staff statements and selection rationale remain history, not independent verification or new reporting. Original editor note: Rainbow Curve leads: a council payment vote, a Rainbow Lane closure that runs to April 2028, and a Macy Road access change most drivers haven't heard about. Following the skeptic, we kept 'dangerous' out of our own voice and attributed the nonpayment claim to the dealer. Q3 2028 covers most of the reconstruction, not completion.
What we couldn’t confirm
- Rainbow Curve's schedule, contract, funding and council authorization are attributed to the newspaper. We did not obtain the council record, contract, plans or payment ledger; discovering the public closure application's configuration did not verify its underlying closure records.
- The report does not establish the total amount Sluyter says is owed or include the city's response to his nonpayment claim. A relocation-payment authorization does not establish whether money has been disbursed.
- The Macy Road access-change date is unspecified. The police collision count lacks comparable prior-year totals, so it does not establish a crash trend or the redesign's safety results.
- We did not read the SCS Engineers treatment evaluation or independently verify discharge requirements, financing or a chosen Eco-Vista alternative. A tentative work session is not a confirmed meeting.
- The alleged scope of the J.B. Hunt incident remains unconfirmed. We did not inspect the complaints or a current docket, and a record count is not necessarily a count of distinct people.
- We read the retained school, rezoning and Knox Trail reports, not their original presentations, engineering records or current agendas. They do not establish a shared wastewater constraint or a final development approval.
